From 2002 Amateur radio in the UK changed with the introduction of the new Foundation, Intermediate & Full Licences. This is designed to encourage more people to take up and enjoy the hobby, by making the new licensing and qualification system more relevant to today's world. There is no age restriction, if you are competent enough to pass the exam, you are able to hold a Licence. Just think, you can talk to people from all walks of life all over the world...and now out of it by chatting to the astronauts on the International Space Station and Space Shuttles. So what's the catch...? None... like any hobby you can get as much, or as little, out of it as you want. However you must first pass the exam. This is nothing to be frightened about though, just a good understanding of the basics of how a radio works and how radio waves travel, together with an understanding of the regulations and an awareness of the morse code. Later you can progress through to the new Intermediate and Full licences, each of which gives the holder additional privileges on the amateur radio bands.
