After many years stirling service, our old telescopic mast on the back of the MCV had finally given up the struggle against the Dartmoor weather. We spent months trying to either get it repaired or source a replacement... the problem was it was going to cost a small fortune to repair it, and only slightly more to replace it!!! and our treasurer was not feeling over generous in letting us spend 'his' hard earned cash! ... (wonder if he is the 'Banker' on ITV's Deal or No Deal?) Then out of the blue an offer we could not refuse an almost brand new ex-military 12m mast. before the banker could say no, we said yes please! and a few days later John, the Deputy Controller turned up grinning from ear to ear with the new kit. Fantastic! The next problem was how and where could we attach the thing. The old one was half the size and weight and was attached to the back door of the MCV, this one is much bigger and heavier. OK only one thing to do, get out the tin opener and attach it through the roof. We have always avoided this as it is a source of water ingress and will soon lead to the dreaded rust worm attacking the vehicle, but there was no other option. Trouble was now we also had to fit a ladder on the back to get at it. The annual Lions Dartmoor Walk saw the first outing, and even though it was only extended about 75% ... what a difference. |
