Total Solar Eclipse

Up

July 1991 was a once in a lifetime day for people in SW England. At just after 11:00 hrs local time there would be a total eclipse of the sun. The first time for over 70 years this spectacular solar display would be visible over part of the UK.

West Devon RAYNET, along with most other south coast groups was called in to assist the Local Authorities, Ambulance Services and the Police. It was, correctly, anticipated that all roads in the area would become nigh on impassable as visitors stopped to watch the display.

With RAYNET Operators stationed at Local Authority Control Rooms, every major road junction and vantage point we were able to pass information to the  Local Authorities and Emergency Services, highlighting trouble spots, delays and requests for assistance.

One very pleasant comment received was that the Police Controls at Plymouth and Exeter were receiving vital traffic information from across the two counties of Devon & Cornwall, faster by RAYNET than through their own radio systems and the CCTV cameras on the Motorway!
